How to make a D&D token

Four steps, about a minute. The token maker works on desktop and phone.

  1. 1

    Add your art

Upload, drag in or paste a character portrait, a monster or any picture. Add several to make a batch.

  2. 2

    Frame the face

Drag to move, scroll or pinch to zoom, and rotate or flip until the head sits nicely inside the token.

  3. 3

    Pick a border

Choose a shape, one of the border styles and its colors. Every border is drawn fresh at your export size.

  4. 4

    Download

Choose a VTT preset or a size up to 2048 px and download a transparent PNG, or every token as a ZIP.

A token generator built for the table

Everything a GM needs to turn a folder of art into game-ready tokens, free.

Borders in any color

18 border styles, from polished gold and riveted iron to runes, thorns and arcane glow, in any color you pick.

Circle, square and hex

Round tokens for most VTTs, square tokens for grids and print, and pointy or flat hex tokens for hex maps.

Batch mode and ZIP

Make a whole encounter at once. Every image keeps its own crop and downloads together in one ZIP.

Up to 2048 px

Crisp, transparent PNG or smaller WebP files at 256, 512, 1024 or 2048 px, or an exact VTT preset.

Private by design

Your images are processed in your browser and never uploaded. No account, no watermark.

Tint and fill

Tint a group of minions to tell them apart, or fill the background behind cut-out art.

Token borders for every character

Each border is drawn in code, so it stays sharp at any size and takes any color. Design one on its own with the token border generator.

VTT token sizes for 5e creatures

A Medium creature fills one grid square. These sizes stay sharp at 4× zoom in Roll20 (70 px grid) and Foundry VTT (100 px grid), or print at 1 inch per square.

Tips for tokens that read at a glance

A token is often shown at 70 px or less. Small choices make it recognizable from across the map.

Crop to the face

Zoom in until the head and shoulders fill the token. Full-body art turns into a speck at grid size.

Color-code sides

Use the faction ring: one color for the party, another for enemies, a third for NPCs.

Tint the minions

Same goblin art, five tokens? Tint each one a little differently, or number them in the name.

Size by the rules

Pick the creature size before you download so a Large ogre covers 2×2 squares without blurring.

Hex maps, hex tokens

On a hex grid, hex tokens sit flush in the cell and never overlap their neighbors.

Keep the source

Download PNG for the cleanest edge. WebP is smaller if your VTT has an upload limit.

Questions

Is this DnD token maker free?

Yes. Every shape, border, color, size and batch download is free, with no account and no watermark.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The token maker runs entirely in your browser. Your art never leaves your device, so it also works for unreleased campaign material.

Does it work with Roll20, Foundry VTT and Owlbear Rodeo?

Yes. Tokens download as transparent PNG or WebP, which every virtual tabletop accepts. Pick the Roll20, Foundry or Owlbear preset and the token comes out at a size that stays sharp when you zoom in.

What size should a token be?

One token covers one grid square for a Small or Medium creature. Roll20’s default grid is 70 px and Foundry’s is 100 px, so 280 px and 400 px tokens stay crisp at 4× zoom. For print, 300 px is 1 inch at 300 DPI. Large creatures use 2×2 squares, Huge 3×3 and Gargantuan 4×4.

Can I make square or hex tokens?

Yes. Pick circle, square, pointy-top hex or flat-top hex. Every border style follows the shape you choose, and hex tokens line up with hex grids in Foundry and Roll20.

Can I make a whole party of tokens at once?

Yes. Drop several images in at once to start a batch. Each token keeps its own crop; “Use this look for all” copies the border and colors to every image, and “All as ZIP” downloads the set in one file.

Is this a token generator that uses AI?

No. You bring the art and the tool crops, frames and exports it. Nothing is generated by AI.

Can I use the tokens in my games and streams?

Yes: use them in your own games, streams, videos and free handouts. Selling products that include our borders, like token packs or VTT modules, needs a commercial license. The picture inside is your own art or art you have permission to use.

Is The Token Maker an official D&D tool?

No. It is an independent fan tool for D&D 5e and other tabletop RPGs, not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast, Roll20, Foundry Gaming or Owlbear Rodeo.
